Agents
End conversation
The built-in tool that lets an agent close a conversation itself, and what you can configure about it.
End conversation lets an agent close a conversation itself instead of waiting
for the caller to hang up. It is a system tool, key end_conversation, and its card
in Built-in tools reads "Control when and how this agent ends a conversation."
It is off on every new agent.
What it does
The agent finishes the conversation on its own: it says its closing line and the conversation ends. There is no endpoint of yours involved.
When the agent calls it
The agent decides, from the description. This is the tool where the description matters most, because a vague one lets the agent decide a conversation is over while the caller still has something to say. Name the conditions, and name what has to happen first.
Recommended
Call this only after the caller has confirmed there is nothing else, and after you
have said goodbye. Never call it while a question is unanswered or a transfer is
pending.Less effective
End the call when you are done.An ended conversation cannot be resumed, and the caller has to start a new one. Switch this tool on only with a description that says exactly when the agent may use it, and test the agent before you put it on a live channel.
Settings
End conversation runs with interruption suppression off. There is no control for it in the portal today. The settings dialog edits the toggle and the description.
What the caller experiences
The agent says its closing line and the conversation ends. A caller who speaks during that closing line is heard, and the agent can answer instead of finishing.
Whether the channel hangs up, closes the chat or simply stops responding is the channel's behaviour rather than a setting on this tool.
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Description length | No limit on the value itself. The portal's box stops at 500 characters |
| Enabled on a new agent | No |
| Delay, grace period or confirmation step | None |
Turning it on
Open the agent, go to the Tools tab, and switch the End conversation card on. The settings button opens the description box and Reset to default. The change applies to the next conversation, so a conversation already running keeps the behaviour it started with.
Building an agent with AI can also switch it on when it creates the agent.
FAQ
Can a caller reopen a conversation the agent ended?
No. They start a new one, and it arrives as a new conversation.
Is there a confirmation step before the agent ends a call?
No. Put the condition in the description instead: tell the agent to confirm with the caller before it calls this tool.
The agent hangs up too early. What do I change?
The description. Write the conditions that must hold first, and say what the agent should do when they do not, such as asking whether there is anything else.
Should I test this before putting it on a channel?
Yes. Talk to the agent in the playground and try to trigger an early ending; see Test your agent.
